Data center technician salary in the US: 2026 pay guide

What data center technicians earn across the US in 2026, how shift patterns, certifications and critical facilities experience move pay, and the routes to senior roles.

Written by James Leighton, Group CEO, Andersen JamesReviewed October 2026
Short answer

Quick answer: most US data center technicians are paid by the hour, with entry level roles typically advertised in the low to mid twenties per hour and experienced critical facilities technicians commonly advertised well above that. Shift premiums, on call pay and electrical or mechanical trade experience move pay more than job title does.

Indicative 2026 pay by level

Entry level data center technician (remote hands, racking, cabling): commonly advertised around $20 to $30 per hour

Data center technician II or III (hardware break fix, network support): commonly advertised around $28 to $40 per hour

Critical facilities technician (electrical, mechanical, BMS): commonly advertised around $35 to $55 per hour

Critical facilities or data center operations lead: commonly salaried in the low to mid six figures

These are indicative ranges based on roles we see advertised, not a published pay scale. Hyperscale, colocation and enterprise operators pay differently, and local labor markets such as Northern Virginia, Dallas, Phoenix and Central Texas move quickly.

What moves data center technician pay

Shift pattern: 12 hour rotating and night shifts usually carry a differential

Trade background: licensed electricians and HVAC technicians are paid at the top of the range because they can work on live critical systems

Certifications: vendor and industry credentials help, but hands on critical environment experience matters more

Site type: hyperscale campuses under construction often pay more to secure people before go live

Career path

The common route runs from IT technician to senior technician, then into either network and systems engineering or critical facilities operations. People who understand both IT and the power and cooling plant are the hardest to find and the best paid.
